The origins of Sandwich horseshoes
After approximately two years of research, we are pleased to offer Sandwich, a new type of shock absorbing horseshoe, to the public. Sandwich is the result of teamwork between a high definition mechanical company, Dr. Hans Castelijns, and Eng. G. P. Lana, (also known as "Picchio" to his friends).
The joint venture started at the beginning of 2004, subsequent to a long reflection regarding the vibrations and high frequency provoked by traditional horseshoes, which cause damage to the cartilage of horses' limbs. The research emphasized the necessity of inventing a shock absorbing horseshoe made of a light alloy in three layers, the middle element being made of a high quality rubber compound, thus achieving a type of "Nike" cushioned effect, ("the pleasure of running"), so that a horse lucky enough to be wearing a pair of Sandwich shoes, would no longer be subjected to further harmful shock impact.
Not to be undervalued is the weight of the actual shoe. A pair of Traditional No. 3 shoes weighs approximately 1kg. whilst the equivalent pair of Sandwich No. 3 shoes weigh 440grms. This implies that a horse would have a lesser amount of weight to haul about during a normal day.
Another important point to consider is how swiftly and effortlessly Sandwich horseshoes can be adapted and shaped to fit a horse's foot. A farrier can easily achieve the desired shape, simply by working with the cold shoeing method. After having been shod with Sandwich shoes, the immediate benefits gained by the hoof will be noticeable; that is the hoof remains tougher and more compact, eliminating all the small cracks caused by the continuous vibrations received whilst treading on various types of surface.
The durability of the Sandwich shoes is not a matter of indifference. The latest tests, which lasted approximately six months, produced remarkable results; the most recent technical modification being, an embedded metallic insert to improve resilience; consequently, a Sandwich shoe's duration can be of 50/60 days.
Why choose Sandwich?
It is a preventative type of shoeing. There is an old saying in Italy " prevenire è meglio che curare" which basically means "it's easier to prevent than to cure".
Particulars of the series.
"Front" is also available in an "S" sfilata (narrow) size, which enables the farrier to choose the best fit of shoe for the horse, so that scarcely any modification is required at shoeing.
"Jumping", comes with a new type of stud application, which means that the screw in channel no longer needs to be kept clean, as it is supplied with it's own cap to avoid dirt collecting in that area.
"Trotto", is made of extremely light material, especially designed for the track, so that hoof impact with the surface will no longer be felt.
We also offer shoes made to measure, personalised for a horse's particular needs. Obviously, delivery would be within approximately 30 days of receiving the order.
Sandwich horseshoes will be on the market at the end of June 2006. |
